Communication of Healthcare Personnel with Persons with Aphasia: Level of Awareness, Practices and Subjective Experience
Komunikace zdravotnického personálu s osobami s afázií: úroveň informovanosti, postupy a subjektivní zkušenost
SCA™, CPT) do českého prostředí.

Overview
Objective: The aim of the study was to identify which symptoms of aphasia are recognised by healthcare professionals and which are most frequently confused or misinterpreted, and to compare these differences across various areas of care. Another aim was to explore how healthcare professionals perceive communication difficulties in patients with aphasia and how they respond in model communication situations. A further objective was to identify the need for additional education in this field.
Methods: The research was conducted using a questionnaire survey in healthcare facilities providing acute, post-acute and long-term care. The questionnaire included both closed and open-ended questions focusing on the knowledge of aphasia symptomatology and communication strategies in model situations. A total of 147 questionnaires were analysed.
Results: Respondents demonstrated only partial knowledge of aphasiological symptomatology. More obvious manifestations, such as non-fluent speech, were recognised more often than subtler symptoms, such as agrammatisms. In model communication scenarios, healthcare professionals most frequently relied on intuitive ad hoc strategies (offering alternatives, repetition, waiting), whereas structured communication methods were used only rarely.
Conclusion: The findings confirm that healthcare professionals make an effort to communicate with patients with aphasia in a supportive manner. Nevertheless, their knowledge of symptomatology is limited and their responses tend to be intuitive. The study highlights the need for systematic education and the potential for implementing structured communication methods (e.g. SCA™, CPT) into the Czech healthcare context.
