Overview
Pneumococcal disease presents a morbidity and mortality burden in elderly population, despite the availability of effective antibiotic treatment. The most severe forms include invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), in which Streptococcus pneumoniae is isolated from a normally sterile body site, and pneumococcal pneumonia without bacteremia. Effective prevention of these diseases is vaccination. In the Czech Republic it is recommended for all patients 65 years and older to be vaccinated with a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). This article presents a case of a frail elderly patient treated for pneumococcal pneumonia at the Department of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine of General University Hospital in Prague. It demonstrates impact on quality of life and risk of fatal course of this potentially preventable infection in its acute phase, as well as in the follow-up care.
