Overview
Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a rare primary benign heart tumour most frequently located on heart valves. Its incidence increases with age and most PFE are diagnosed in older age groups. Despite its benign characteristics PFE may present with life threatening embolic events. With routine use of echocardiography and other imagining techniques PFE is diagnosed more frequently, often as an incident finding. Aetiology of PFE is unknown. Surgical treatment is a method of choice if the patient is otherwise able to withstand the surgical procedure. However, there are no recent evidence-based guidelines for PFE treatment due to its rare occurrence. The aim of the papers is to provide readers with the basic description of this rare tumour, which could be seen in geriatric practice. Further to present a case study of PFE in older patient who was treated in the Department of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague.
