Overview
Current options for fetal surgery in the Czech Republic
Fetal medicine is a highly specialized multidisciplinary part of feto-maternal and perinatal medicine. The first open fetal surgeries were performed as early as the 1980s. However, the complete solution of congenital defects in the womb has historically been associated with high fetal mortality, significant neonatal mortality and serious complications in mothers. Currently, the concept of minimally invasive fetal surgery dominates, which is associated with a reduction in the duration of the surgical procedure and a reduction in the radicality of the operation. Minimally invasive fetal surgery improves the conditions for subsequent definitive correction of operable defects in newborns. The condition for successful fetal intervention is new methods of prenatal diagnosis, new anesthetic procedures during in utero intervention and the availability of highly specialized neonatal care.
In 2012, the Center for Fetal Medicine (CFM) was established at the Institute for Maternal and Child Care, which closely cooperates in the transfer of know-how with a renowned foreign partner (University Hospital Leuven, Belgium). The review presents current options for fetal treatment in the CFM and the possibilities for further development of fetal medicine.
