Overview
Preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes
Preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes is defined as rupture of the fetal membranes with leaking of amniotic fluid before the onset of regular uterine activity prior to gestational age 37+0 weeks. This pregnancy pathology is responsible for approximately one-third of all preterm births, complicates approximately 2−4% of all pregnancies, and represents one of the greatest challenges of contemporary obstetrics. In this review article, current perspectives on the pathophysiology, intra-amniotic inflammatory complications, management and treatment of preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes are discussed. The review article reflects the current guideline of the professional society on this complication of pregnancy.
