Overview
Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common haematological malignancy, characterized by the clonal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow and the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin. The disease causes organ damage defined by the CRAB criteria (hypercalcemia, renal failure, anaemia, and bone lesions). Due to the influence of modern medicine, MM is transforming from an acute to a chronic disease, with the primary goal being the achievement of long-term minimal residual disease negativity. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of diagnostic and classification criteria, the genetic heterogeneity of the disease, and innovative therapeutic approaches.
