Overview

Pecha M, blažek V, Bretšnajdrová M, Danielová L. Prevalence of osteoporosis and risk factors with emphasis on pharmacotherapy in the geriatric ward

Introduction: osteoporosis represents a significant health problem in the geriatric population with substantial socioeconomic impacts. this study analyzes the prevalence of osteoporosis and its risk factors with emphasis on pharmaco therapy in patients hospitalized at the Geriatric Department of University Hospital olomouc in the first half of 2025.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from 262 patients hospitalized at the geriatric department. Demographic characteristics, history of osteoporosis and fractures, pharmacotherapy, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, and other risk factors were monitored.

Results: the study group consisted of 67.6 % women, with a mean age of 83.2 years. osteoporosis history was present in 14.1 % of patients, fracture history in 46.2 %. the most common drugs worsening bone metabolism were proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole 39.3 %, omeprazole 16.4 %), diuretics (furosemide 38.3 %), and levothyroxine (32.7 %). Severe vitamin D deficiency (<50 nmol/l) was found in 42.6 % of ex amined patients. only 5.4 % of patients received specific osteoporosis treatment.

Conclusion: the study confirms high prevalence of osteoporosis risk factors in the geriatric population with insufficient specific treatment. Results emphasize the need for systematic approach to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in hospitalized geriatric patients.
