Overview
Low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWH) are cornerstone agents for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic events. In the Czech Republic, preparations containing enoxaparin, nadroparin, and bemiparin are commonly used. Compared with unfractionated heparin, LMWH offer a more predictable effect, suitability for subcutaneous administration, and a lower risk of complications. This article provides a concise overview of available anticoagulants and focuses on practical aspects of safe LMWH use – dosing, correct injection technique, and laboratory monitoring, including anti-Xa and other hemostasis parameters. Emphasis is placed on adherence to medication-safety principles, verification of patient identity, and prevention of medication errors. The importance of educating both patients and healthcare personnel is highlighted as a key component of effective and safe therapy.
