Overview
Over the past few years, a dense network of private plasma donation centres has been established in the Czech Republic. They offer financial rewards for blood donation. State-run transfusion centres prefer non-remunerated blood and are now increasingly concerned about the loss of blood donors and the risk of decreased blood product manufacture. However, no systematic state-wide research regarding donors to confirm this hypothesis exists. The authors present an analysis of blood donor fluctuation between state-run and private transfusion/donation centres in Brno, where only a single state-run transfusion centre has co-existed with a single private plasma donation centre over the past ten years. The results of the analysis did not confirm the concern above. Blood donor fluctuation is in both directions and, over the past years, fluctuation from the private plasma donation centre to the state-run transfusion centre has predominated. Therefore, it can be assumed that the possibility of a financial reward is not the most important reason for choosing a blood donation centre. The financial motivation is interesting predominantly for students, while employed people often prefer tax concessions associated with non-remunerated blood donation.
