Overview

Objective:
To summarize published data on the importace and the use of the dopplerometry of the venous duct in the clinical practice. Design: A review article.

Setting:
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Hospital, Olomouc.

Subject and methods:
A review from literatue and bibliographic databases.

Results:
Dopplerometry of ductus venosus is an important diagnostic metod of examination of fetal venous system. In the first trimester of pregnancy it is used as a complementary method of the combined genetic screening of fetal aneuploidies. In the following trimesters and during the opening phase of labour it can provide an early warning of a gradual failing of the compensatory mechanisms in the redistribution of blood flow of threatened fetuses.

Key words:
dopplerometry – venous duct – fetal venous circulation
