Overview
Deep neck infections are a frequently overlooked cause of significant morbidity and mortality. They pose serious risks to patients through airway obstruction, aggressive spread of inflammation into the mediastinum or other soft tissues of the head and neck, and the development of sepsis or septic shock. This article focuses on the perspective of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine, and their role in managing these complex cases. Airway management is often complicated by trismus, edema, and secretions, often requiring advanced techniques such as videolaryngoscopy or bronchoscopy; in some cases, surgical tracheostomy in cooperation with the surgical team is necessary. Postoperative care involves assessing the risk of airway compromise and sepsis, with some patients requiring continued analgosedation and ventilatory support. The intensivist coordinates antimicrobial therapy, monitors for organ dysfunction, and ensures nutritional and rehabilitative support. Only through effective interdisciplinary collaboration can satisfactory outcomes be achieved in the treatment of such devastating conditions.
