Proteomics and Its Role in Medicine
Proteomika a její místo v medicíně
Proteomika je nový metodický a koncepční přístup ke studiu živých systémů, který usiluje o zmapování celého proteomu – bílkovinného komplementu genomu. Snaží se tedy o kvantitativní i kvalitativní popis všech bílkovin přítomných v daný okamžik v buňce, tkáni či organizmu. Základními nástroji proteomiky jsou separační techniky založené na principech elektroforézy a chromatografie, sloužící k rozdělení složitých bílkovinných směsí, a hlavně hmotnostní spektrometrie využívaná k identifikaci jednotlivých proteinů. Proteomika je velmi mladým a bouřlivě se rozvíjejícím oborem, který však již prokázal obrovský potenciál pro studium mnoha fyziologických i patologických molekulárních mechanizmů i pro přímé využití v diagnostice závažných onemocnění.

Overview
Proteomics is a new methodological and conceptual approach to the study of live systems, which aims to map the whole proteom - the protein complement of genome. It aspires to describe quantitatively and qualitatively all proteins present at the given moment in the cell, tissue or the organism. The principal tools of proteomics are separation techniques based on electrophoresis and chromatography, which are used to fractionate complex protein mixtures and namely the mass spectrometry used for the identification of individual proteins. Proteomics represents very young and rapid developing specialization, which has already proved its valuable potential for the study of various physiological and pathlogical molecular mechanisms and for the direct use in the diagnostics of serious diseases.
