Overview
Advance directives solve the problem of decision making about the future of an unconscious or otherwise incompetent patient at the end of their life. This article reviews the history of advance directives and summarizes the experience with their use in USA over the past 20 years. The documents, which have undoubtedly contributed to the more effective implementation of a patient’s right to self-determination, have sparked debate in society as well as in the healthcare community, and influenced the development of advance directives movement in other countries.
Key words:
advance directives, right to self-determination.
