Flavonoids as Antioxidants

Overview
In the human body reactive oxygen and nitrogen compounds are formed, which attack biologicallyimportant substances - proteins, DNA, lipids and other compounds, and serious diseasesdevelop.Flavonoids, a group of compounds widely occurring in nature, possess antioxidant nature andcan deactivate these above mentioned substances and thus prevent various diseases. Thesearomatic compounds are formed in plants predominatly in the form of glycosides. Their strongantioxidant properties are intensively studied, especially in connection with cardiovasculardiseases. The scavenging of radicals by flavonoids and their physiological properties arediscussed.
Key words:
flavonoids - deactivation of radicals - physiological effects.
