Overview

At the EASD Annual Meeting 2025, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors were presented as an established pillar of cardiorenal protection with effects extending beyond glycemic control. Data from randomized clinical trials and observational analyses confirm their significance in reducing hospitalizations for heart failure by approximately 30% and in slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease, even in patients without diabetes mellitus. The congress emphasized the need for early initiation of treatment, individualization based on organ-specific risk, and an interdisciplinary approach.
